Sam

When asked the question how long have you been a landscape architect, I respond truthfully: my whole life. Born and raised in Colorado by parents who are both landscape architects, my experiences and upbringing have been viewed through the lens of landscape architecture. I spent my youth in the garden while my parents pruned, weeded, planted and envisioned our yard as an extension of our house; inside, out. I watched them draw and create and build with care and passion; that sensibility is embedded in my being. I am naturally observant of my surroundings, aware of the feel of a space, the textures, the colors, the details, the way that people move and react to their environment. I have had the opportunity to travel extensively, and I remember places by the texture of the walls, the smells of a plaza or garden, the sound of water, the feel of the pavement beneath my feet. That awareness feeds my design instincts and understandings.

My foundation in landscape architecture is supported by my educational background.  After completing my undergraduate degree in architecture, I had an internship in Santiago, Chile which allowed me to develop a unique perspective on design while immersed in the daily life of another country and culture. My study of architecture integrates seamlessly into my practice as a landscape architect; attentive to the relationship between building and site, and the transitions between the two, along with the technical background to understand construction detailing and documentation.

My professional resume includes a balance of work as a landscape architect and as a landscape contractor in the field; that dual background provides me with a deeper understanding of how to move from an idea and a vision to a constructed project.  Having participated in the construction process, I have a fundamental understanding of how things are built from how the land is shaped, to the flow of storm water across the site, to material selection and installation, to coordination with other consultants and contractors, to the importance of project schedules and budgets. That frame of reference informed my work while at DHM Design, a Colorado based landscape architecture and planning firm, where I was an Associate involved with projects of all kinds: ranches, hot springs, residences, and more; responsible for drawing, designing, detailing, documenting and overseeing the installation.

It feels inevitable that I would be working alongside my dad and my brother in Carpenter Studio. We have explored the landscape as individuals and as a family, and now we bring that collective energy and knowledge to our clients and projects. I could not be more excited for what’s to come.
