Our process evolves through collecting and analyzing information about the conditions of a place. We overlay what we learn from the site with the needs of our clients, using drawings that are both evocative and technically sound to communicate our ideas. Our expertise is fluid and inclusive, intending to bring awe into everyday life with designs inspired, but not bound, by what we have done before.
Analysis & Observation
Client meetings and site visits are at the core of beginning a project, developing relationships between people, the environment, and the greater community.
Conceptual Design
Research and newfound knowledge spark idea generation. We utilize drawings, renderings, technical review, photography, and character imagery to communicate and collaborate with clients and the design team.
Design Documents
A vision is supported by an understanding of how to move from idea to execution. Refined concepts are translated into design documents, ready to be sent for submittals and construction.
Construction
Designs evolve as they are built. Our role is to stay aware of the design intent and adjust it to be the highest quality end product. Observation and craftsmanship go hand-in-hand.

Formed in January 2022, Carpenter Studio builds on the legacy of Dave Carpenter’s forty-year career as a landscape architect, infused with the design and fabrication knowledge of Sam and Ben Carpenter.
As a studio based in the Mountain West, we have worked on projects throughout the region from Colorado to California, Canada to Arizona. We are licensed in CO, MT, WY, NV, and ID, and continue to explore and build in the Western US. Our breadth of work is not limited to these areas, including ranches, resorts, and residences of all scales and complexities, well-suited for their unique locations.
Our designs emphasize beauty and wellness for people and places. We seek to understand, to find the sense of place, to express its essence, and to respect the natural and cultural settings in which we work.
We are innately relationship-based, collaborating with team members and experts in their fields to expand our understanding and move the vision forward. We are here to listen; then we generate practical solutions to create spaces that grow and sustain over time.
